Have you ever heard of focus groups? A focus group is a small group of participants who share their feelings or perceptions on a particular topic with researchers. The best part, you are paid for your time!
Back in 2011, a friend introduced me to this unique way of making money, and I embarked on my first focus group journey. I signed up for my first company, which required me to create a profile and answer some questions. About a month later, I received an email invitation for a banking study. The email had a pre-screener quiz to complete. After submitting the quiz, a representative called to ask me a few additional questions, eventually earning me a spot in the study.
The in-person study, lasting two hours, paid $200.00. I arrived at the location and checked in. I was given a clipboard and an additional survey to complete while waiting. The group was comprised of six people, including me, and a moderator. The study took place in a large conference room where we all sat at a large table. A two-way-mirror was present in the room. On the other side of the mirror, company executives observed our reactions to mock commercials and print ads. The moderator interacted with each participant and the time was spent discussing the materials we had viewed. At the conclusion of the study, I received my payment and was on my way.

Since that first experience, I've delved into numerous focus groups, both online and in person. The compensation varies, ranging from $75.00 for a quick 30-minute study to $500 for more complex studies. I have even been paid to test out mattresses which required me to nap for two hours on. What a dream that was. In my experience payment was made via a virtual VISA card or cash.
While focus group opportunities may not be a monthly occurrence, registering with multiple focus group companies increases your chances of having more opportunities. Companies often operate on a 3-6 month rotation, ensuring a diverse blend of participants.
Focus groups are found all over the United States so there should be opportunities for everyone, especially if you live in a big city. Below are a few of my favorite focus group companies. L&E Research
Leibowitz Research While the above companies might not be in your immediate area, they can serve as a guide to understanding and seeking out similar opportunities in your area. It's also important to note that legitimate focus groups never require payment from participants; instead, they compensate you for your time and valuable opinions. Always be cautious of any company asking for payment to participate. Focus groups are fun and a great way to make some extra cash. Who's ready to add this income stream to your list of side hustles?
